So recently, I’ve been trying to swap all my makeup out to cruelty free from mainly using MAC makeup. Let me tell you something – this is so hard to do. The quality and durability of MAC makes it such a winner for me. However, I came across Kat Von D last year and have slowly been trying some of these products, including the Studded Kiss Lipstick.
The full price of the lipstick is £15.30 in the U.K, which obviously stays more on the higher end. As far as I know, it can only be found at Debenhams. (I actually picked mine up on holiday in Florida from Sephora!). As I have only ever really used MAC, I’m going to compare it to my MAC matte lipsticks in terms of how it applies and wears throughout the day.
First of all, let’s just admire the packaging! It’s so kick ass and sassy, you can really see that Kat Von D personality shining through in this. I just love how unique the whole look is, it drew me in instantly.
The colour I went for was a typical Charlie shade – Cathedral. If you’ve read my MAC Lipstick Must Haves post, you’ll notice that I’m obsessed with that brown-pink-mauve look. Which is just what colour Cathedral is. Yay!
It really suits my pale/cool skin tone, but even with that Florida tan, it’s a go-to shade for me. It’s great to wear for both day and night and quickly became one of my favourite shades. The only dupe I could find in my collection was MAC’s Twig shade, however that’s slightly more purple.
I’m not sure how to rate the quality of this – especially compared to MAC. For example, it’s not kiss-proof and can be very easily smudged. I found that it faded fairly quickly from the centre of the lips, especially if eating or drinking, which gave me a strange 90’s lip liner look – not good. You can see from the photo below how smooth MAC goes on in comparison which makes me wanna go straight back to Twig.
My MAC lipstick definitely performs better in terms of staying power, I kind of expected a little bit more from the hype of KVD lippy. However, a top up every now and again doesn’t bother me all that much I suppose.
Each long-wear, pigment-rich lipstick is formulated with ‘Colour Cushion Technology’ to keep your pout feeling comfy and velvety soft.
I can’t lie, it does go on smooth and definitely feels velvety on the lips! It has a matte finish, that is not too drying and makes your lips look creamy without being shiny. I do love the look and feel of this particular Studded Kiss shade.
Would I buy more shades of the Kat Von D lipstick? Actually, the more I think about it, yes I would. Not that I need anymore lipsticks right now! With it not being as durable as MAC matte lipsticks, I wouldn’t go for a dark shade in this brand. However, I’d love to try the famous Lolita and Lovecraft is also at the top of my list.
I think this is absolutely worth trying, especially in this shade. It’s a lovely product and the packaging especially makes it worthy for your make up collection. Plus 100% Vegan and Cruelty Free!! – Bonus! I’m also really into the KVD Everlasting Liquid Lipstick and the Tattoo Eyeliner, watch out for reviews of these two products in the future!
Have you ever tried any of the Kat Von D beauty products?
Have you got any cruelty free brands for me to try?
