With the new year coming in and fitness and wellbeing being talk of the town, I thought I’d share my fave healthy breakfast with you, overnight oats!
I discovered this gorgeous, nutritious (pudding style) breakfast about a year ago on Pinterest and have been a lover ever since. It’s a well known fact that starting your day is best with a good, healthy breakfast. Something I have been slacking on well before the Christmas period started! I’m always super hungry at work in the mornings and I just tend to grab whatever is in front of me – whether it’s an apple or a cake – I’ll eat it. However, when I do have a healthier breakfast, it makes me more likely to make healthier food choices throughout the day. I’m sharing this with you, not only to inspire you to try this delish dish, but also to motivate myself to eat better. Inner Charlie, listen up!
In the week, as I mentioned above, I don’t really have a breakfast, but I did used to take breakfast to work. This is something I have to start doing again. When I used to take overnight oats to work it would literally fill me up from 7am (I eat as soon as I arrive) until around 12pm/1pm – whereas this year so far I’ve been picking at random
crap that I am fully aware is not good for me. For those that don’t already know – I work full time in a bakery/patisserie.
Show me the oats!
One of the brilliant things about overnight oats, is that they’re not only healthy, but highly convenient for someone on the go. I always find that when trying to eat healthily, preparation is key. These little pots of goodness take so little time to prepare too!
As the name suggests, you prep these the night before, ready for your morning brekkie. I love that I can just grab these out the fridge and pop it straight in my bag on the way out the door.
When I’ve seen these made online, they’re usually made in an old jam jar or mason jar – as you do need a lid to shake it all up. I usually make mine in this Sistema breakfast container, which works really well size wise. Although last night I made them in a cute little Kilner Jar.
My favourite recipe for overnight oats is so simple, so healthy, and honestly just amazing!
Here’s what you’ll need:
- A small jar or breakfast container
- Oats (I just buy the cheap rolled oats)
- Hazelnut milk (you can use other milks but hazelnut is what makes it sweet – I ran out and used almond milk)
- Greek Yogurt
- Blueberries and other berry fruit
For my method, I just use the size of the tub as a guidance, by splitting it into thirds.
In the first third of the tub, I put in the belly busting oats.
The second third is the Greek yogurt (you can use normal vanilla yogurt if you wish but it won’t be as healthy or as delicious).
In the last section, I pour in hazelnut milk and pop in the blueberries and sometimes chopped strawberries, grapes or raspberries.
You then just snap the lid shut and give it a really good shake about, before putting it in the fridge overnight. When you’re ready to eat it, the oats will have soaked up the Greek yogurt and milk and made a gorgeous sweet breakfast, that’s almost like a bircher. I sometimes add in chopped almonds, the more protein in the morning, the better.
How easy was that?!
As long as you have the oats and yogurt, you can literally make any combination of flavours. I’ve also tried a toffee apple combo, using toffee yogurt and finely chopped/grated apple and even a pina colada version with shredded coconut and chopped pineapple!
