There’s so much I love about this time of year, the cooler weather, the darker nights, just that general cosy night in feeling and build up to Christmas. There’s always so much to look forward to, so I thought I’d share a few things I’ve been loving this winter so far. If you guys got the email draft version of this – I apologise, WordPress crashed and published my ideas before I had chance to write anything up!
Putting Up Our Christmas Tree
I always love doing this, not only does it get me in the mood for Christmas, but it’s also a chance to look back at memories. I love that we can go out and buy the odd decoration here or there and remember when and where we brought it. For example, we brought a cuckoo clock decoration from the most amazing Christmas decoration shop on our mini trip to York last year. The Disney decorations on our tree have always been gifts from my mum. This year, my mother in law brought a special one for us – our little Ollie’s first tree decoration! I love that our tree is unique and full of our personality and things we like.
This time of year brings a whole new array of candle scents. Say goodbye to the floral and fruity scents of summer and hello to winter spices, gingerbread and mulled wine! I love that a scented candle can help set the atmosphere of your living space. My favourite last year was Spiced White Cocoa by Yankee Candle, also their Festive Cocktail was delish! This year my mum brought me a huge gingerbread jar candle from Lidl, it’s so delicious and makes the whole house smell like festive baking.
Firstly, you can’t beat all the new seasonal specials at coffee shops such as Starbucks and Costa. I’m absolutely in love with Costa’s Black Forest hot chocolate and can’t wait to try their hazelnut praline version!
Secondly – I go mad for hot chocolate during winter anyway. Especially in the evening, I love making them in our special mugs with plenty of squirty cream and marshmallows! This one I made the other day has to be the prettiest I’ve made so far!
Cranberry Sauce In Sandwiches
I don’t know about you, but the arrival of cranberry sauce in pre-made sandwiches is a sure sign that Christmas is on its way. You can’t go far wrong with a warm turkey, stuffing and cranberry baguette really can you? Although I did try a ‘Pigs Under Blankets’ panini from Costa yesterday and I’ve gotta say – it was incredible. Pork sausage, bacon, cheese, spinach and CRANBERRY! 😍
I love that so many places put on events these days for Christmas. Whether it’s a Christmas market, a dressed up stately home, a carol concert or even a Christmas light switch on. Everywhere seems to do more each year and I love that it’s a way of getting out, getting into the Christmas spirit and supporting local businesses. One of our local pubs is hosting a lovely night next week, where everyone meets at the pub and walks by candlelight to the church to watch the carol singers. Afterwards, a walk back to the pub for mulled wine and roast chestnuts. How cute!
Dark Nights Drawing In
I know a lot of people hate this, but it’s one of my favourite things about winter. There’s something nice about leaving work in the cold and the dark and driving home whilst checking out all the Christmas lights that people have put up. Then getting home and getting all cuddled up with blankets, fluffy pjs, candles and hot chocolates of course! I’m actually on maternity leave now so won’t be driving home from work, but watching the sky turn dark within minutes is quite relaxing – it also means that it’s almost dinner time, I’m always hungry at the moment!
So there’s a few of my fave things about winter time. What are some of yours?
